Stanton Drew

14 15 A greAT henge surrounding the site An enormous henge ditch, 135m in diameter and 7m wide, once encompassed the main circle at Stanton Drew with an opening to the northeast, perhaps allowing sight of the Midsummer sunrise. During excavations several pits were also found, five in the central area of the rings and four in the NE Circle, in a quadrilateral pattern aligning with opposing pairs of the eight stones of that circle. The pits may have contained posts or stones which were removed, possibly an earlier smaller version of the present monument.
