# Li - Dynamic Form in Nature

32 33 PhyllotAxy dynamic spirality The leafdistribution system of plants is determined by a strict mathematical progression the famous Fibonacci series, but where this arrangement is closely confined, as in the cabbage, the leaves jostle with each other to create a complex, chaotic mass. A succession of slices through a cabbage which is essentially a greatly enlarged terminal bud reveal how the underlying geometrical sequence is disturbed by the differential growth of individual leaves. This progression, from a relatively orderly to a far more fluid formation, can be seen as a paradigm for the interaction between the two great principles of form and energy and of the resultant complexity. That such a humble example can invoke such an elevated analogy at all is, of course, indicative of the underlying reasons for the enduring aesthetic appeal of li.
