28 The heart starts life as two primitive tubes that unite to form a cylinder, which is beating by the end of the embryos third week. It grows, twists, and segments into a four chambered pump which beats nonstop about a hundred thousand times a day. Each heartbeat is an electrically fired synchronised contraction which initiates in a node of pacemaker cells in the right atrium. The pulse is differentially conducted over the heart to become a rising spiral wave. The easilydetected electromagnetic field of this is often shown in 2D as . In each beat, the two atria squeeze pooled blood through the atrioventricular valves into the ventricles, which wring it out in a vortex through the two semilunar valves. The lub dup sounds are the four valves shutting, in two pairs. This twin pump contracts as one, but runs a pair of circuits. The right heart collects blood from the body and sends it to the lungs, from where it returns, freshly aired, to the left heart, which pumps it around your body again, including to itself, via the frugally narrow coronary vessels. Half of all bloodflow at any time goes through your lungs, and at the middle of this endless airbody loop is the heart, which thus unites the interior with the exterior. Heart cells transmit electricity to each other, like nerves, though unlike the brain, the heart has only one basic electrical pattern. The electromagnetic field of each beat pulsing through the brains sensitive nerves may be why some say the heart is the deepest core of the mind.
