Dedicated to the memory of my colleague, friend and mentor during my years on the Isle of Lewis, Dr Alastair Fraser. I originally researched the antiquarian and astronomical material on Callanish in 197584, when living a mile from the site. My partner in these investigations was then my wife, now Mrs Margaret Curtis. As coauthors, we recorded our findings in guide books to the sites, in several technical papers and in two unpublished volumes see page 58. My thanks go to all who helped at that time, including Western Isles Libraries, local residents and the many archaeologists and other stones enthusiasts who visited us in Lewis. For material in this book and permission to reproduce it, thanks are due to National Monuments Record of Scotland, Edinburgh 27 upper National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh this page, 11, 21 upper, 39, 47, 49 upper Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen 16,17 University of St Andrews Library 33 National Archives, Kew 29 lower, 49 lower Ordnance Survey, Southampton 23 Wiltshire Archaeological Society, Devizes 13 Oliver and Boyd title page, 31 lower Edinburgh University Press 6, 7 lower Patrick Ashmore and Historic Scotland 9 and Gail Kelly 35 lower.
