Avebury

36 37 A timber structure first stood here five thousand years ago, a few hundred years before Silbury Hill was started. A thousand years later, with Silbury, Avebury and the Avenue finished, stone circles were built here, either inside or replacing the hut. The diameter of the outer stone circle, shown in the picture, was 130 feet. Stones still visible in the engraving were removed soon after Stukeleys visit. Just one remains today. The Sanctuary lies at the end of the Avenue, alongside the Ridgeway path. Marker posts today show different constructions from four different dates of building activity. Archaeologists have noticed that the numbers of posts in each ring are almost always multiples of four. The sAnCTuAry at the end of the avenue
