Avebury

24 25 buried stones at Avebury as Alexander Keillers restoration was interrupted by the war and never resumed. It is thought that there used to be twentyseven stones in the North Circle, with another three in the Cove, again making thirty in all. There may well have been an inner circle too, of twelve stones, 170 feet across see page 3. The fallen stone in the picture is still there, near the eastern entrance which is also nowadays the quietest and most attractive, the ancient route down from the Ridgeway. Of the North Circle just four stones remain today. Like the South Circle it is thought to have measured 340 feet across, although some sources reckon it nearer 320 feet.
