Ancient British Rock Art

40 41 An interesting aspect of this subject is the distinct stylistic differences which exist not only between different sites, but actually within the same area. For instance the Badger Stone on Rombalds Moor displays some variations on the cupandring motif while the nearby Idol Stone has significant arrangements of simple cups following the shape of the stone with lines. The Tree of Life, on Snowden Moor, has a even more fluid and organic approach with less emphasis on multiple rings, while Northumberlands West Horton Goddess almost looks like a human or spirit family, with the rings some quite angular channelled to allow the tail to pass through. It may be that these differences are due to different artists, but there is also the possibility of styles emerging over a period of time. styLEs Rombalds Moor, N.
