Ancient British Rock Art

22 23 Ballygowan is one of a number of sites in the Kilmartin Valley which display considerable and complex arrangements of rock carvings. As at West Horton in Northumberland below the carvings mainly consist of cups, rings, tails and pathways but also, similarly, there are occasional anomalies such as the small horseshoe labyrinth in the bottom left of the picture opposite. Some of these small elements appear so rarely that they can be considered as being specific to the site, making it even more difficult to propose a consistent explanation for these carvings. Most of the sites in the Kilmartin area are easily accessed and well worth a visit. bALLygowAn cArvIngs nr Slockavullin, Kilmartin Valley, Argyllshire West Horton, NorthumberlandChris Mansell
